Spring is here and that means the Main Street Trenton Farmer’s Market is just a few days away. In 2024, that means Saturday, May 18.
Located in the historic Sesquicentennial Park in downtown Trenton, visitors can spend a Saturday morning checking out local and area vendors of all ages who offer their homemade wares for sale to the public.
From fresh produce, baked goods and flowers to handmade jewelry, soaps and, yes, even dog treats and dog toys, visitors are sure to find a number of unique items that meet their shopping needs.
For years, Trenton had one of the top farmer’s markets in the area, with local producers gathering each week during the spring, summer and fall months in the Rock Barn area to sell their wares to eager buyers interested in purchasing the items they had to offer. But as the number of vendors dwindled, the market eventually closed down and for the past few years, shoppers were forced to look elsewhere to purchase those items that had been staples of the local farmer’s market.
With the implementation a few years ago of the Main Street program in Trenton, interest was rekindled in establishing a farmer’s market for this area, using downtown as its location. In May of 2023, a small group of vendors brought their wares to Sesquicentennial Park and the new farmer’s market became a reality.
The downtown farmer’s market is held on Saturday morning, beginning in mid-May and continuing through September. Hours are from 8:30am to 11:30am (or longer, if sales are booming). The layout of the park allows buyers easy walking access to look over what each vendor has to offer and there is plenty of parking in the downtown area to make getting to the market a breeze.
What makes the Main Street Farmer’s Market so unique is the makeup of the vendors. The local market has attracted a number of youth selling items ranging from farm produce and homemade soap to dog treats and toys, with many using their funds to finance school-related activities, including educational trips, athletic/music camps, etc. The number of youth participating in the market last year has resulted in plans to have a “youth market” on the last Saturday in June (June 29).
“Christmas in July” is again being planned for the last Saturday in July (July 27). This popular event gives shoppers a chance to get a head-start on their holiday gift buying as well as being able to choose from the large amount of fresh produce always available for sale at this time of year.
If you happen to arrive before the downtown market opens and haven’t yet had breakfast, don’t worry. There are usually several eating options available to try, including food trucks offering coffee and muffins, sandwiches, homemade lemonade, etc. At least one time a month, owners of The Uprooted Kitchen (located at Five Points, right across from the park) have their famous biscuits and gravy available for sale. But you have to get there quick as this delicious and reasonably priced food item sells out fast.
There is no charge for persons to set up a vending site. However, those wanting to sell on a particular Saturday are asked to contact the Main Street Trenton office to secure a space. Persons can call or text 816-838-3545 or email director.mstrenton@gmail.com. You can also visit www.mainstreettrentonmo.org for more information.
